GUN SAFETY INITIATIVE

Our next meeting of the

Wayland Community for Gun Safety is

Thursday, June 20th at 7:00 pm,

at the United Church of Wayland.
You are welcome to attend.

United Church of Wayland launched a Gun Safety Initiative as a key part of its commitment to community wellbeing and child safety.  To that end, the church committee and community leaders held a Community Forum on Gun Safety scheduled on  February 22, 2023.

Yard signs with the design shown here are available at United Church of Wayland.  You can stop by during business hours and pick one up for your yard.

Guns are now the leading cause of death for children and teens.  An unlocked gun at home increases risk of homicide by 2 times, suicide by 3 times, and domestic-violence fatality by 5 times.  Every day, an average of eight children and teens are unintentionally injured in a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home.

This gun-safety social justice action is solely to bring safety measures into place to save lives, especially the lives of our children.”

Through the efforts of Committee Chair Nancy Whitley, United Church of Wayland recently received a grant from the United Church of Christ to support this important work.

“This campaign is avoiding any position on gun-control laws,” said committee chair Nancy

Whitley.  “We are not entering that forum. However, innocent adults and children are being killed and injured. Families are devastated and suffering. Locking guns is now the law in Michigan.  We believe we can – and must – act to prevent further gun violence and educating the public on gun safety is one way to do that".
