The United Church of Wayland launched a Gun Safety Initiative as a key part of its commitment to community well-being and child safety. To that end, the church committee and community leaders held a Community Forum on Gun Safety on February 22, 2023. Since then we have been connecting with the community through community and school activities to encourage safe gun storage.
We are proud to partner with area, state and national organizations such as:
-
City of Wayland
-
Wayland Union Schools
-
Wayland Township
-
Leighton Township
-
Be Smart–Secure Gun Storage
-
Wayland post of the Michigan State Police
-
Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce
Guns are now the leading cause of death for children and teens. Every day, an average of eight children and teens in our country are unintentionally injured or killed in a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home.
We offer free gun locks to the community which are provided by our local police agencies. They are available to you from the Wayland City Police or Michigan State Police, Wayland Post, or by contacting Wayland Community for Gun Safety.

This safe gun storage education initiative is solely to bring safety measures into place to save lives, especially the lives of our children.

Through the efforts of Committee Chair Nancy Whitley, United Church of Wayland recently received a grant from the United Church of Christ to support this important work.

“This campaign is avoiding any position on gun-control laws,” said committee chair Nancy
Whitley. “We are not entering that forum. However, innocent adults and children are being killed and injured. Families are devastated and suffering. Locking guns is now the law in Michigan. We believe we can – and must – act to prevent further gun violence Educating the public on gun safety is one way to do that.

We welcome you to join us in protecting our children by contacting us on our Facebook page or email, attending a community meeting or inviting us to speak to your group.
